About Bauxite
Bauxites are a sedimentary rock formed by weathered volcanic rocks. It is a naturally occurring material comprising principally of one or more aluminium hydroxide minerals together with various alumino silicates and tramp minerals such as hematite, anatase and silica.
Bauxites are typically classified according to intended commercial use such as for aluminium metal, cement, abrasives, chemicals and refractory.
Open pit mining is the most common method used to extract Bauxite. Manufacturing generally involves a the sequence of mining, crushing, purification, drying, calcining and milling.
Use in Aluminium production :-
During the manufacture of Alumina, Bauxite is reacted with caustic soda (NaOH) under controlled pressure and temperature. This converts the alumina into an aluminate. Various other reactions, separations and precipitations are used to convert and remove the other unwanted minerals. The intermediate product is then dried and if necessary calcined and milled to achieve the relative grading and chemistry.
